Camp Atterberry...........

This campground is only a few miles from our home base and maybe one of the nicest and quietest  place we have camped in this year. Camp Atterberry is a retired former U.S. Army base used during WW2 for training, hospitals and POW camp for Italians and German soldiers. Wakeman Hospital had 6000 beds for the treatment of facial and head injuries, it was the leading hospital for plastics eyes.  In the 1940's around 41,000 acers of land was used for the creation of Atterberry it spans in parts of 3 counties and is still used today as a National Guard training site as well as a VA clinic, The camp was very active during the Gulf Wars.

Johnson County and the state DNR have received land from the site that allows fishing and hunting and camping along with the finest horse riding and show rings in the mid-west.  The campground has water and electric with level gravel pads with a dump station on site, The site we choose was away from the main campground, we had a nice grass side yard with no noise from the other campers so we could self distance without any problems. The side yard gave the kids a great play space as well as a great place to set up the telescope for some star gazing on the clear nights. We biked all over the place as the roads are flat and some what smooth, the kids fished in some of ponds and caught many small fish that excited them.
