Eagle watching on a winters day....

I have seen reports on Facebook of 60 or more eagles being sighted in one day along the lakes and rivers in northern Indiana, so of course I needed to make the 2 hour one way treck to see for myself.
My son Aaron who is home from North Dakota and is an avid birdwatcher was along for this adventure.

Our first stop was at Lake Salamonie, we crossed the large Dam and to our surprised the lake was in its winter pool stage and was what we thought was very low water levels.  The visitors center was open so a quick stop for a map of the lake, now armed with a map and suggestions on where to see eagles we where on our way.  Our first stop was the spillway behind the dam and sure enough 1 adult bald eagle was perched high in a tree over looking the fast moving water coming out of the spillway, He saw us but knew we where not a threat so we where able to snap as many pictures as we wanted.

We then moved over to a picnic area on the other side of the river to get a better view of this eagle, this view got us closer to the eagle but also had many tree limbs to hide its body, still nice to see how majestically these birds are in the wild.  While at this spot there is a small pond with a boat ramp so I decided to try out my luck at magnet fishing, with a light skim of ice on the lake it was not idea conditions for magnet fishing, I did catch several hooks in short time we where there, I cant wait to try the magnet again when we go to Florida next month.

We then headed to the Wabash River, the Wabash is the longest river in Indiana and empties into the Ohio river in the far southern point of Indiana, Lake Salamonie was created as a flood control lake for the Wabash, It provides recreation, wildlife habit and economic benefits for this region of the state. We stopped at place called hanging rock that over looks the river, we saw 5 adult and 1 juvenile eagles at this spot and 1 more in a tree far away. In total we saw 7 eagles on our short trip to this area.  We didn't see anywhere near 60 but still a good showing for this trip. I'am sure  return trip will be in my future plans.
